Improv Nonsense: Better Conversations
I agree to the point you’re trying to make about knowing how to hold a relevant/interesting conversation.
However, I’ve been disappointed to discover that a TON of people in improv (latter UCB stages such as advanced or even Harold team members) have a VERY hard time not talking about themselves - related to the conversation on hand or not. I’ve also noticed that these people tend to be a bit more “theatrical” than other improvisers, so I have to assume some connection. It is rare that these people will EVER ask a question of me or another person during a conversation, which is a normal, polite conversation skill.
So, in my personal experience, improvisers aren’t immune to horrible conversation abilities, and, in fact, may be greater offenders of poor tactics.
Improv can make you funnier, will likely make you a better actor, and could maybe even get you work. But one thing it will definitely do is make you better at having conversations.
You listen better, you speak to the heart of the matter more, you lie less, you speak more concisely.
